The upazila administration in Laxmipur has seized and destroyed illegal fishing nets and fined three fishermen Tk 21,000 in total during a drive to protect mother hilsa.

The seized small hilsa were distributed among three local madrasa-orphanages and the Laxmipur District Shishu Paribar.

The drive was conducted at Majuchowdhuryhat in Laxmipur on Sunday (October 11), when two crates of small hilsa were seized. The fish were later distributed among the three madrasa-orphanages and the district's Shishu Paribar.

Sanjay Ghosh, assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate of Laxmipur Sadar upazila, led the drive.

The upazila fisheries officer, Coast Guard Laxmipur and members of the Laxmipur district office of the Department of Narcotics Control assisted in the operation.

In a separate drive, a man was sentenced to 15 days of imprisonment and fined Tk 50 under the Narcotics Control Act.

The district administration said such drives would continue to prevent the use of illegal fishing nets, protect mother hilsa and control narcotics.
