Bangladesh has sought assistance from the World Bank to cope with mounting pressure on the energy sector and manage rising costs amid global instability, said Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury on Monday.
Discussions are underway with the World Bank, including work on a framework agreement to strengthen cooperation, the minister said on Monday on the sidelines of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group in Thailand.
The finance minister told reporters that Bangladesh is facing additional expenditure in the energy sector under the current global circumstances, creating a need for financial support to ease the burden.
He said the World Bank had shown a positive attitude towards providing assistance and expressed hope that the multilateral lender would continue to stand by Bangladesh.
Amir Khasru stressed that cooperation with the World Bank should extend beyond existing funding arrangements.
''Broader support was needed to help Bangladesh address the effects of global uncertainty and the ongoing energy crisis.''
He added that discussions and procedural work on a framework agreement were continuing, with both sides exploring ways to make their partnership more effective.
The minister also underscored the importance of aligning ongoing initiatives with the objectives and priorities outlined in the government's election manifesto.
He expressed optimism that closer coordination with the World Bank would help advance those goals.
