The Bangladesh Coast Guard has rescued four fishermen held hostage by the Samrat gang in the Sundarbans for ransom, while the suspected pirates fled into the forest during a special operation.
Coast Guard media officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the information on Monday (October 12).
He said the Coast Guard was conducting two special operations, named ‘Operation Restore Peace in Sundarbans’ and ‘Operation Mangrove Shield’, to eliminate active pirate gangs in the forest and ensure security in coastal areas.
Acting on a tip-off, the Coast Guard learned that members of the Samrat gang were staying near the Arbunia Canal in the Shipsa River area of the Sundarbans.
A special operation was subsequently conducted in the area, leading to the rescue of the four fishermen. The suspected pirates fled deeper into the forest after sensing the presence of Coast Guard personnel, leaving the hostages behind. No one was arrested.
According to the rescued fishermen, members of the Samrat gang abducted them on October 10 while they were fishing for fish and crabs in the Sundarbans. They were allegedly tortured while being held captive to force their families to pay a ransom.
The rescued fishermen were identified as Moinur, 50, Badsha Gazi, 39, Sujan Hossain, 34, and Imam ul Mallik, 22. All four are residents of Paikgachha upazila in Khulna district.
The Coast Guard said arrangements were underway to hand them over to their families.
