A court in Dhaka has shown former Rajshahi-4 (Bagmara) lawmaker Abul Kalam Azad arrested in a case filed over the alleged attempted murder of a man during the 2024 anti-discrimination student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order on Monday, following a petition by police.
Azad, a former member of parliament from the now-banned Awami League, was brought from jail to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court earlier in the day.
Police sought to show him arrested in the case to facilitate a proper investigation. After hearing the application, the court approved the request and ordered that he be sent back to jail.
Public prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the development.
According to the case statement, Alek Khan was taking part in a procession organised as part of the anti-discrimination student movement in the Jatrabari area of the capital on August 5, 2024, when he sustained bullet injuries.
After receiving medical treatment, Khan filed a case with Jatrabari Police Station on February 18, 2025, accusing individuals of attempted murder.
The latest court order formally links Azad to the case as an accused under investigation. The allegations against him have yet to be established in court.
