Observer Online Report
A 24-year-old housewife was found dead at a house in Karimullabag area under Shyampur Police Station in the capital on Monday, with her family alleging that she was strangled over dowry demands.
The deceased was identified as Tasrin Jahan. Her husband, Rony Ahmed, and mother-in-law, Rokeya Begum, were detained by police following the incident, which reportedly occurred around 1PM.
According to the deceased’s family, Tasrin married Rony about two years ago. They alleged that she had faced physical and mental abuse by her in-laws over dowry demands since the marriage.
Tasrin’s uncle, Selim, alleged that several local arbitrations had been held over the issue. Despite the family providing furniture, including a showcase and a refrigerator, along with cash, her in-laws continued to demand more money and threatened to send her back or kill her if the demands were not met.
He further alleged that the family tried to make the death appear to be a suicide by hanging her body from a ceiling fan but failed. They later took her body to a hospital without informing her family, he added.
A Shyampur police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said police recovered the body from Dhaka Medical College Hospital after receiving information through the national emergency service 999. The body was sent to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
The official said the two detained suspects were being questioned and that the exact cause of death would be determined after the autopsy report. The process of filing a case with Shyampur Police Station was underway.
