Man gets life term for raping schoolgirl

A Lalmonirhat court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a schoolgirl and recording and circulating a video of the incident.

The convict, Nur Nabi, was also fined Tk 50,000, with an additional three months of hard labour in default.

Judge Nityananda Sarkar of the Lalmonirhat Children’s Violence Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict on October 12.

According to the case documents, the incident took place in 2015 when the schoolgirl went to inspect her father’s jute field. Nur Nabi, who was working nearby, allegedly took her to an adjacent maize field, raped her and recorded the incident.

The victim’s family later filed a case with Hatibandha Police Station. After hearing the case and examining 19 witnesses, the court delivered its verdict in the presence of the accused.

The court also sentenced Nur Nabi to three years and two years of hard labour under separate provisions of the Pornography Control Act, along with fines of Tk 30,000 and Tk 20,000, respectively.

Two other accused, Mobarak Ali and Belal Hossain, were acquitted as the charges under the pornography law against them were not proven.

Public prosecutor Lutfor Rahman said the plaintiff’s side was satisfied with the verdict.
