A fire that broke out at Manzur Khan Plaza in Chawkbazar, Old Dhaka, spread to an adjacent building on Monday evening, prompting nine fire service units to respond.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence received information about the blaze at 5:04pm. The fire originated on the sixth floor of a seven-storey building housing the market.
Fire Service duty officer Rashed Bin Khalid said five units initially responded to the incident. Although the fire was brought partially under control, heavy smoke remained inside the building.
The fire later spread to a neighbouring building, prompting the deployment of nine units to bring the blaze under control.
Firefighters were facing difficulties tackling the fire due to the thick smoke, the official said.
The cause of the fire and the extent of damage could not be immediately determined. No information was immediately available about casualties.
