National Citizen Party (NCP) chief organiser for the southern region and Cumilla-4 MP Hasnat Abdullah has criticised nepotism and political favouritism in the distribution of public benefits and recruitment, saying that if the government introduced “widow cards”, an MP’s wife would be the first to claim one.

He also alleged irregularities in the recent recruitment of fertiliser dealers and criticised the appointment of the vice-chancellor of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), claiming that the appointment was opposed by teachers and students at the university.

He made the remarks on Monday while attending a reception for GPA-5 achievers organised by Metropolitan Chhatra Shakti at the Narayanganj District Shilpakala Academy as the chief guest.

Referring to the recent recruitment of fertiliser dealers, Hasnat alleged that the children and sister-in-law of an MP had secured dealerships, raising questions about fairness and equal access to public opportunities.

“If the government introduces widow cards now, the MP’s wife will be the first to take one,” he remarked, adding that the same people would be first in line to claim “unemployment cards”.
