CUET teachers, staffers go on work abstention

CHATTOGRAM, Oct 12: The Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Teachers’ Association announced a complete work abstention and all-out non-cooperation demanding the removal of the newly appointed Vice Chancellor.

In a press conference held at the university auditorium around 3:30 PM on Monday, it announced the programme.

Teachers, officers, and staff  members demanded the removal of newly appointed Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam and the immediate reinstatement of former VC Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Muhammad Sayem.  The announcement followed an incident earlier that day when the newly appointed VC entered the campus and his office by breaking a padlock, accompanied by political activists.

CUET Teachers’ Association President Professor Mohammad Ahsan Ullah strongly condemned the VC’s presence in the office with outsiders, stating the VC would be held responsible if any untoward incident occurred.
“We strongly condemn the VC’s presence in the office with outsiders.  He will be held responsible if any untoward incident occurs,” Ahsan Ullah said.

The association also alleged that two buses carrying students towards the campus from the city came under attack. It demanded an investigation and action against those responsible.

Ahsan Ullah further said he had no information about any proposal from the VC for talks, adding, “CUET’s community does not accept him as vice-chancellor.”

He said 15 examinations had been missed and classes had remained suspended for 13 days. The association has made plans to prevent further academic delays after the situation returns to normal, he added.

Following the press conference, teachers brought out a procession on the campus.
