A Dhaka court on Tuesday sentenced former Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) chairman Iqbal Uddin Chowdhury and seven others to 14 years in prison each in a corruption case over the allocation of plots in the Purbachal residential project.

Judge Md Abdus Salam of Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-9 delivered the verdict on October 13.

The other convicts are former RAJUK members S.D. Foyez, A.K.M. Wahedul Islam, S.M. Zafar Ullah, H.M. Jahurul Haque and Md Rezaul Karim Torofder, along with Amber Group Managing Director Shawkat Aziz and Ashfaq Aziz.

The six former RAJUK officials were sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment under each of two provisions: Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947 and Section 409 of the Penal Code. The sentences will run concurrently, resulting in a total of 14 years.

Shawkat Aziz and Ashfaq Aziz received the same sentences under the two provisions. Each convict was also fined Tk 2 million, with an additional year of rigorous imprisonment in default of payment. Time already spent in custody will be deducted from their sentences.

The court acquitted all eight defendants of charges under Section 420 of the Penal Code, relating to cheating. It also ordered the cancellation and confiscation in favour of the state of two plots allocated to Shawkat Aziz and Ashfaq Aziz in Sector 1, Road 405, Plot Nos. 011 and 013.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on February 8, 2017, alleging that the accused abused their influence and acted in collusion to allocate two 10-katha plots in Purbachal, 20 kathas in total, to Shawkat Aziz and Ashfaq Aziz, causing financial loss to the state.

After completing its investigation, the ACC submitted a charge sheet. During the trial, the court recorded testimony from nine prosecution witnesses.
