Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) has expelled 12 students from different departments for two academic years for resorting to unfair means in examinations. The university has also cancelled their respective examinations.

The decisions were taken unanimously at a meeting of the university’s Board of Discipline, chaired by the vice-chancellor, at the administrative building on Tuesday morning.

According to university sources, the expelled students include two from the 2021 series, three from the 2022 series, four from the 2024 series and three from the 2025 series.

Among the two students from the 2021 series, one is from the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETE) department and the other from the Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) department.

Of the three students from the 2022 series, two are from the Civil Engineering department and one from the Mechanical Engineering department.

The four students from the 2024 series include three from Civil Engineering and one from Mechatronics Engineering.

The three students from the 2025 series are from Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE).

Under the decision, the fourth-year odd-semester examinations of the 2021 series students, the third-year odd-semester examinations of the 2022 series students, the first-year backlog examinations of the 2024 series students and the first-year odd-semester examinations of the 2025 series students have been cancelled.

After completing their suspension, the students will be allowed to sit the relevant examinations again through readmission.

The university also decided to retain electronic devices and other items seized from the students during examinations. Their confiscated mobile phones and calculators will remain in university custody and be returned after the students complete their academic programmes.

Professor Dr Md Robiul Islam Sarkar, member secretary of the university’s Disciplinary Committee and director of student welfare, said the RUET administration maintained a strict stance against examination malpractice.

He said students must develop honesty and moral values alongside academic knowledge. He added that the university had already increased the opportunities to sit backlog and short-semester examinations to five, making the continued use of unfair means a matter of serious concern.
