Four teenage girls who reportedly met through a TikTok group and decided to live together have been rescued by police from Hemayetpur in Dhaka, six days after going missing from their homes.
According to police, the girls rented a house in Hemayetpur, where two pairs reportedly held marriage ceremonies and began living together. Police rescued all four on Sunday (October 11) with the help of information technology.
Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahidul Islam confirmed the matter on Tuesday afternoon (October 13).
Police sources said a teenage girl from Mirpur in Kushtia became acquainted with another girl from Rupganj in Narayanganj through TikTok. Their acquaintance reportedly developed into a close relationship. Similarly, two other teenage girls from Mirpur formed a relationship through social media.
The four later decided to live together. Following their plan, three girls from Mirpur left their homes on October 5 and travelled towards Dhaka, where they met the girl from Narayanganj.
According to preliminary police information, the girls later rented a house in Hemayetpur. Two of them reportedly decided to marry each other and performed a ceremony by touching the Holy Quran. They then claimed to be living together as spouses. The other two girls were also staying at the same house.
During the investigation into the missing girls, police tried to trace their whereabouts. Under the supervision of Mirpur Police Station OC Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Kakhiladaha Camp In-charge Sub-Inspector Yusuf Ali and his team used information technology to locate them.
Police subsequently conducted a drive in Hemayetpur on the evening of October 11 and rescued all four girls. Police said their ages ranged from 15 to 17.
OC Shahidul Islam said, "three girls reported missing from Mirpur were rescued from Hemayetpur with the help of information technology. A girl from Narayanganj was also rescued at the same time."
He said, preliminary findings indicated that the girls had developed relationships through a TikTok group and had left their homes intending to live together.
The OC added that the girls were sent to court after being rescued and completing the necessary legal procedures.
