Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice-Chancellor Professor Sheikh Shariful Alam left the campus under police escort on Tuesday evening after being rescued from confinement in the administrative building by the district administration and police.

Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia and Police Superintendent Md Masud Alam brought him out of the administrative building at around 6:00 PM. He was then taken away in an ambulance under police protection.

Protesting students allowed the vice-chancellor to leave on one condition: he must not return to the campus.

After he was brought downstairs, a student announced over a microphone that they were allowing him to leave only on the condition that he would never return to CUET. The deputy commissioner and the police superintendent were present beside the student.

As the vice-chancellor was placed in the ambulance, students chanted slogans calling him a fraud.

The protests began after students demanded the reinstatement of former vice-chancellor Professor Abu Sadaat Muhammad Sayem. On Monday morning, the newly appointed vice-chancellor broke the lock on the main gate of the administrative building and entered the premises, triggering fresh tension.

Students alleged that Sheikh Shariful Alam entered the campus with outsiders. They intensified their protests and demanded his resignation, warning that they would keep him confined if he did not step down within the stipulated time. He had remained inside his office since then.

The university has been facing a prolonged stalemate over the vice-chancellor’s appointment since 21 September. Students launched demonstrations demanding Sayem’s reinstatement, locked the vice-chancellor’s building and later held several protest programmes, including masked marches and marches with their eyes covered. They eventually boycotted classes and examinations and called for a complete shutdown of the university.

On Monday, the CUET Teachers’ Association, Officers’ Association and Staff Association jointly announced a non-cooperation programme in protest against the vice-chancellor’s entry. Work stoppages by teachers, officers and employees have disrupted academic and administrative activities.

At around 5:20 PM on Tuesday, the deputy commissioner and the police superintendent entered the campus to rescue the vice-chancellor.

The deputy commissioner said a respected teacher had sought security and medical assistance, adding that they had come to take him away and that he would be admitted to a hospital.

The vice-chancellor was taken out of the administrative building at around 6:00 PM and placed in the ambulance. The hospital where he was taken was not immediately known.
