Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milan has stressed the need for teachers to gain in-depth knowledge of technology and artificial intelligence (AI) to effectively teach students in an increasingly technology-driven world.

He made the remarks as the chief guest at the inauguration of an orientation training course for the 49th Bangladesh Civil Service (General Education) cadre officers at the Rural Development Academy (RDA) in Bogura on Tuesday.

Addressing the newly appointed teachers, the minister said modern students were increasingly skilled in information technology, making it essential for teachers to keep pace with technological advancements.

He said a key responsibility of an ideal teacher was to encourage students who sat at the back of the classroom and lacked the confidence to ask questions.

Emphasising research for the overall development of education and teachers, Milan said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had given the education sector the highest priority. He urged teachers to work with dedication and sincerity, beyond political and ideological differences, to build a modern and developed Bangladesh.

A total of 613 newly appointed officers of the BCS General Education cadre are participating in the eight-day orientation course.

The programme was chaired by Dr Sardar Md Keramat Ali, secretary (in-charge) of the Secondary and Higher Education Division.

Special guests included Bogura-6 MP Rezaul Karim Badsha, Bangladesh Nationalist Party executive committee member and Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal vice-president Nazmun Nahar Baby, Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education Director General Professor Dr Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel, and RDA Bogura acting Director General Md Abdul Majid Pramanik.

Professor Dr Wasim Md Mezbahul Haque, director general of the National Academy for Educational Management, delivered the welcome address.

Speaking to journalists after the event, the education minister said the government was considering holding supplementary examinations within 15 days of the publication of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results for students who failed in no more than two subjects.

The proposed arrangement aims to prevent students from losing an academic year. However, students who fail the supplementary examinations may be transferred to technical or vocational education, he said.

Later, the minister inaugurated a new educational support programme by Khan Academy Bangladesh at 100 educational institutions across Bogura, Netrokona and Cox’s Bazar districts. He also planted a commemorative tree on the premises of RDA Laboratory School and College.
