Sajek Ganadhikar Rakkha Committee and Sajek Karbari Association have announced an indefinite road blockade in Sajek, Rangamati, from Thursday, accusing the administration of failing to honour its commitments to address their demands.
The two organisations announced the programme in a joint press release issued on Wednesday, signed by Babudhan Chakma, convener of the Sajek Ganadhikar Rakkha Committee, and Naton Joy Chakma, president of the Sajek Karbari Association.
According to the statement, the blockade will resume over three demands, including the removal of armed members of the JSS Santosh Group from various locations in the Masalong area of Sajek.
The organisations said they had previously enforced a blockade on the Sajek tourist road on October 11. The protesters suspended the programme after the administration assured them that their demands would be met within 48 hours.
However, the groups alleged that the authorities had failed to implement the commitments even after the deadline expired.
The blockade will continue uninterrupted from Thursday until the safety of local residents is ensured and what the organisations described as harassment by armed groups is brought to an end, the statement said.
The organisers said ambulances, fire service vehicles, vehicles carrying dead bodies, emergency medicine suppliers, newspaper delivery vehicles and vehicles carrying journalists on reporting assignments would remain exempt from the blockade.
