Turkish police raided the Istanbul headquarters of opposition broadcaster Halk TV on Wednesday (October 14), halting its live broadcasts and preventing staff from entering the building, according to a report by Reuters.
The channel said hundreds of police officers entered its premises while a search was underway. Its live broadcast was cut off at 6:30AM, after which pre-recorded programmes began airing.
A government-appointed trustee was assigned to take over the channel’s management. Editor-in-Chief Suat Toktaş reportedly requested permission to continue live broadcasts, but the request was rejected.
The operation came amid an investigation into channel owner Cafer Mahiroğlu over alleged bribery, bid rigging and money laundering. Authorities issued detention warrants for 17 people, with 11 detained, according to reports.
The allegations have not been established in court.
