Over 5.21 lakh posts remain vacant across various government institutions in Bangladesh, according to working papers presented at a parliamentary standing committee meeting on Wednesday (October 14).

Out of 19,86,272 total sanctioned posts, 14,64,350 employees are currently in service, leaving 5,21,922 positions unfilled.

The government has formulated short-, medium-, and long-term action plans to fill these vacancies in line with its electoral manifesto, according to documents submitted to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Public Administration.

During the first 180 days of the government's tenure, 2,061 posts were filled against a target of 2,879 positions across the Ministry of Public Administration, its subordinate offices, and field offices.

In field administration—comprising offices of Divisional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, and their subordinate establishments—14,578 posts remain vacant out of 41,755 sanctioned positions, with 27,177 staff currently working. Within the core Ministry of Public Administration, 124 of 629 sanctioned posts are vacant, with 505 personnel currently in service.

The meeting discussed recruitment through special Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) examinations, candidate vetting processes, and intelligence reporting protocols. Transfers of administrative officers and disciplinary measures for non-cooperation or negligence in official duties were also reviewed.

Committee members emphasized that administrative measures should not be taken solely based on political affiliation.

The Committee President directed officials to clearly highlight any legal or administrative hurdles impeding government decisions. The panel also recommended identifying causes behind slow-moving projects and ensuring transparency, accountability, and mutual cooperation in public administration.

Committee President Sayeed Ahmed presided over the meeting, attended by State Minister Abdul Bari, Whip ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan, Shahjahan Chowdhury, Amirul Islam Khan, Fakhr Uddin Ahmed, Rehena Akter Ranu, and Nurul Islam Bulbul.
