The government plans to introduce affordable, AI-assisted screening for breast and cervical cancer at the upazila level as part of efforts to expand access to primary healthcare across Bangladesh.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain announced the initiative on Thursday at a workshop at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka.
The minister said the government was prioritising primary healthcare to ensure quality medical services reach people at their doorsteps. Key initiatives are being identified for phased implementation through pilot programmes, as all planned measures cannot be rolled out simultaneously.
Emphasising women's access to healthcare, Sakhawat said steps must be taken to ensure that women do not face harassment or uncomfortable situations during pregnancy.
To this end, the government is planning to transform healthcare centres into one-stop service facilities, allowing women to access essential services more conveniently.
The government also intends to use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to support screening and testing for breast and cervical cancer. The services will be introduced gradually at the upazila level, with the aim of keeping costs affordable.
The minister said expanding access to primary healthcare and bringing essential treatment closer to ordinary people remained key government priorities.
The government would implement its healthcare plans in phases to broaden service coverage and improve access to quality medical care, he added.
