Former law adviser and Dhaka University professor Asif Nazrul has called former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton “foolish” for honouring Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus with the Hillary Rodham Clinton Award.
In a post on his verified Facebook page at 4:56 PM on Friday, October 16, Asif wrote, “Hillary Clinton is so foolish! She has honoured Dr Yunus again!”
The post received nearly 3,000 likes, with many users also sharing it.
Clinton presented the award to Yunus at a ceremony at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, on Thursday, October 15, according to local time.
Around 400 guests, including ambassadors from about 25 countries, entrepreneurs, academics and researchers, attended the event at Gaston Hall, according to a press release issued on Friday. Guests stood and applauded for an extended period after Yunus’s name was announced.
Four people received the honour this year, including Yunus, Reema Nanavaty, director of India’s Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA), fashion designer and Tory Burch Foundation founder Tory Burch, and Muna Sukhtian, board chair of Jordan’s Microfund for Women. Sukhtian received the special Georgetown Ambassadors Award.
