The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has instructed all public and private hospitals and medical colleges across the country to purchase and preserve three books on BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia in their libraries.
The directive was issued in a letter signed by Khandaker Robiul Islam, senior assistant secretary of the Health Services Division, on September 27.
The letter asked the heads of relevant departments and directorates under the ministry to take necessary steps to implement the instruction.
The three books named in the letter are President Zia: Political Biography, Begum Khaleda Zia: Life and Struggle and Bangladesh Above All. All three were published by Jatiyatabadi Prokashona Sangstha.
According to the letter, the institutions concerned have been requested to collect and preserve one set of the books published by the organisation.
The ministry's directive followed a letter dated August 23 from Jatiyatabadi Prokashona Sangstha, located at Islami Tower in Banglabazar, Dhaka, requesting that the books be collected and preserved.
The instruction has been circulated to several agencies, including the Health Education and Family Welfare Division, Directorate General of Health Services, Directorate General of Family Planning, Directorate General of Drug Administration, Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery, and Directorate General of Medical Education.
Copies of the letter were also sent to the National Institute of Population Research and Training (NIPORT), the Health Economics Unit, the Department of Health Engineering, and NIMU and TSC.
However, the letter does not specify any budget allocation or funding for purchasing the books. It also provides no detailed instructions on the procurement process.
The directive requires the institutions to acquire and preserve the books, but leaves questions about financing and purchasing arrangements unaddressed.
