TupTup Resort, a wooden resort on Patuartek Beach in Inani, in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya was operating without approval and a Fire Service licence, despite being issued a warning notice over fire risks in June, according to the Fire Service and Civil Defence director general.
Brigadier General Sultanul Afreen Junaid said the Fire Service had inspected the resort in June and subsequently issued a notice warning that it was risky.
However, the resort continued operating illegally, he said.
A sudden fire broke out at the resort on Saturday, killing seven people and injuring more than 10 others.
The director general disclosed the information while responding to a question from journalists at a press briefing around 12:30PM on Saturday.
It is reported that about 30 people were present at the resort when the fire broke out.
Sultanul Afreen stated that the three-story wooden resort housed a restaurant on the ground floor, where food was prepared. The second and third floors were used for tourist accommodation. The resort lacked the necessary certification from the Fire Service.
In response to a question regarding the safety and authorization of resorts built with wood and other combustible materials in various tourist areas across the country, including Cox’s Bazar, the Director General said that, in many instances, the necessary permits had not been obtained.
He added that steps would be taken to engage with the concerned parties and issue formal notices to them.
