Fugitive gets 10 years for sexually abusing six-year-old

A Dhaka court on Saturday sentenced fugitive Md Kamrul to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually abusing a six-year-old child in South Keraniganj in 2018.

Judge Munshi Md Moshiur Rahman of Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 also fined him Tk 50,000, with one year of simple imprisonment in default.

State prosecutor Md Ershad Alam said the court issued an arrest warrant against Kamrul, who was absent when the verdict was delivered. It also ordered the sale of his movable and immovable properties to recover the fine and pay the proceeds to the victim’s family.

According to the prosecution, Kamrul lured the child into his room with promises of money and food while she was visiting her maternal grandparents. He allegedly sexually abused her there. Her mother and grandparents rescued her after she screamed and locals later handed Kamrul over to police.

The child’s mother filed a case with South Keraniganj Police Station. Police submitted a charge sheet against Kamrul, the sole accused, on May 1, 2018. During the trial, nine of the 10 witnesses testified.
