Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has again declared the Strait of Hormuz closed, warning that action will be taken against vessels violating Iran’s rules in the strategically important waterway.

The IRGC Navy said two oil tankers caught fire on Saturday after striking naval mines while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian state media, the two tankers were carrying around two million barrels of crude oil combined. The reports could not be independently verified.

Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported that the two vessels had switched off their tracking and radar systems and attempted to use a route through the strategically important waterway without Iran’s authorisation. It added that one of the vessels became disabled after striking a mine.

Earlier, state media reported that the other tanker had also struck a mine while attempting to cross the strait through a route not authorised by Iran.

The incidents occurred amid rising tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Shipping through the waterway has been disrupted by the war between the United States and Israel against Iran, driving up global energy prices and inflation.

Maritime authorities said on Wednesday that a container ship and a dry cargo vessel had sunk near the strait in two separate incidents after being struck by missiles or other projectiles.

Attacks around the waterway have increased over the past two weeks. Iran has said it is intensifying its attacks in response to a US blockade of Iranian ports and stringent sanctions imposed last month.
