Kaptai in Rangamati is expecting a surge in tourists during the Durga Puja holidays, with most hotels and resorts already fully booked, local tourism operators said.

Surrounded by hills, lakes, rivers and lush greenery, Kaptai offers a range of natural attractions, including the Karnaphuli River, Kaptai Lake, Sita Pahar, tea gardens and forests.

Tourism operators have prepared to welcome visitors during the long holiday, but finding accommodation may be difficult as advance bookings have filled most rooms at hotels, motels, rest houses and resorts across the upazila.

Popular attractions, including Panorama Jhum Restaurant, Lake Paradise Picnic Spot, Raingkhiyang Island, Nisorgo River Valley and Pod House, Floating Paradise, Chandralok, Lakeshore and Lakeview, have also seen advance bookings ahead of the holidays.

Masud Talukder, manager of Nisorgo Pod House in Shilchhari, said the facility has 10 non-air-conditioned rooms and eight air-conditioned rooms. All the rooms have already been booked for the Puja holidays.

Mohammad Jahangir, director of Raingkhiyang Island in Kaptai Lake, said all 10 rooms at the facility had been booked. Visitors have also made advance reservations for tents, leaving no rooms available for new bookings.

Kaptai attracts nature lovers with its combination of hills, lakes, rivers and green landscapes. Visitors can explore forested hills, enjoy views of the lake and take boat trips along the river and lake.

Wild elephants are sometimes spotted along roads and at the foot of hills in Kaptai. Their movement near the Karnaphuli River and Kaptai Lake, including scenes of elephants entering the water, also attracts nature lovers. Visitors are advised to keep a safe distance from the animals.

Mohammad Idris, president of the Kaptai Boat Owners Association, said they expected a large number of tourists to visit Kaptai Lake during the extended Puja holidays.

Visitors hire motorised boats of different sizes to explore the lake. Boat owners expect demand for these services to rise during the holiday period.

Local tourism entrepreneurs have called for planned development, improved transport links, safe accommodation and a tourist-friendly environment to expand Kaptai's tourism potential.

Haji Mohammad Moinuddin Jewel, managing director of Floating Paradise Restaurant and Resort in Shilchhari and a tourism entrepreneur, said Kaptai had immense potential because of its natural beauty.
He expressed hope that thousands of tourists would visit the area during the Puja holidays to explore attractions such as the Karnaphuli River, Kaptai Lake, Ram Pahar, Sita Pahar and the Wagga Chhara tea garden.

Local tourism operators expect the holiday rush to boost business at Kaptai's tourist destinations and increase income for boat operators, transport workers and small traders.
