Police recovered the hanging body of a 17-year-old girl from a rented flat in Lohagara upazila of Chattogram on Saturday night.
The body recovered from a room on the fourth floor of a building in Rashidar Para area of Sadar Union around 11:30 PM on October 17.
The deceased was identified as Jannatul daughter of Babul from the Sayedabad area of Dhaka. She had been living with her mother in the rented flat in Lohagara.
Her mother, Mahmuda Akter Beauty, said she had been watching television at home after having snacks with her daughter in the evening. A short while later, she found her daughter's room locked from the inside.
Looking through an opening in the door, she saw her daughter hanging from a ceiling fan and began screaming for help.
The mother suspected that her daughter might have died by suicide following emotional distress over her romantic relationship with a young man named Simon.
Lohagara Police Station Sub-Inspector Nur Uddin said, "police went to the scene after receiving information through local union parishad member Shah Alam Liton. They later broke open the door and recovered the body."
The body was sent to the morgue at Chattogram Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. Legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident, he added.
