A proposal to relocate Bangladesh Secretariat to the site of the former international trade fair ground in Agargaon Sher-e-Bangla Nagar may be placed before the cabinet on Sunday (October 18).
The cabinet meeting will be held at 4:00 PM in the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat, with the prime minister in the chair.
After the meeting, the cabinet secretary will brief journalists on the decisions at a press conference room of the Press Information Department at the Secretariat at 6:30pm.
The proposed relocation of the Secretariat from Abdul Gani Road has been under discussion for a long time.
The issue has recently resurfaced, with a proposal to start lower court proceedings at the current Secretariat site. In this context, the former trade fair ground in Agargaon has been proposed as the new location for the Secretariat.
Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher recently said, "the Secretariat would be relocated to the Agargaon site during the tenure of the current government."
He said preliminary assessments and preparatory work were underway and that the proposal would be placed before the cabinet for approval. The main relocation process would begin once the cabinet makes a decision, he added.
The minister said, "a master plan for relocating the Secretariat had been prepared in the past, and policy-level work and preliminary procedures had begun accordingly. The proposal would be presented at the upcoming cabinet meeting, with further steps to be taken quickly if approval is granted."
Zakaria Taher said, ''the existing Secretariat frequently faces complications due to limited space and inadequate parking facilities. Offices of several ministries are scattered across buildings outside the main complex."
He also noted that most of the Secretariat's buildings were constructed in the 1960s and had become old. Renovation and the search for a permanent alternative have become necessary in view of safety concerns, including risks posed by earthquakes and other natural disasters.
Considering these factors, the government is working towards fully relocating the Secretariat to a new site in Agargaon during its current tenure, he said.
Referring to the prime minister's directives and commitment, the minister said the government aims to complete all preliminary and major construction and relocation work within its stipulated timeframe, subject to formal cabinet approval.
