The proposal to relocate the Bangladesh Secretariat from Abdul Gani Road in central Dhaka to the former trade fair grounds in Agargaon is likely to be placed before the Cabinet on Sunday.

The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is scheduled to begin at 4pm at the Cabinet Division conference room in the Secretariat.

Cabinet Secretary will brief journalists on the meeting’s decisions at 6:30PM at the conference room of the Department of Information at the Secretariat.

The long-discussed relocation plan has recently regained momentum amid proposals to begin lower court proceedings at the Secretariat’s existing site. Under the proposed arrangement, the government offices would move to the former trade fair grounds in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar’s Agargaon area.

Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher recently said the government planned to relocate the Secretariat to Agargaon during its current tenure.

He said preliminary assessments and preparatory work were underway and that the proposal would be placed before the Cabinet for approval. The main relocation process would begin if the Cabinet gives the go-ahead.
