Anisul, Palak shown arrested in attempted murder case

A Dhaka court on Sunday showed former law minister Anisul Huq and former state minister for ICT Zunayed Ahmed Palak arrested in an attempted murder case over the loss of a driver’s left eye during the 2024 anti-discrimination student movement in Jatrabari.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order following a hearing.

On September 30, Sub-Inspector Awlad Hossain, investigation officer of the case at Jatrabari Police Station, sought to show the two former ministers arrested, citing preliminary evidence linking them to the incident.

Both are currently in jail in another murder case. The prosecution supported the application, while defence lawyers, including Farzana Yasmin Rakhi, opposed it. After hearing both sides, the court approved the request.

According to the case statement, Mamun, 25, and others joined the student movement in Jatrabari on July 18, 2024. Around 3:00pm, gunfire was allegedly opened at protesters on the flyover in front of Jatrabari Police Station.

Mamun sustained bullet injuries to several parts of his body, including his head and left eye. He was first taken to Kajla Islamia Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

After three days of treatment, his condition deteriorated, and he was moved to the National Institute of Ophthalmology, where he eventually lost his left eye, according to the complaint.
