Zimbabwe recovered from an early collapse through a commanding partnership between Craig Ervine and Brendan Taylor before bowling Bangladesh out for 172 to secure a 99-run victory in the opening match of the UAE ODI tri-series in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
After being asked to bat at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Zimbabwe were reduced to 24 for three inside seven overs as Taskin Ahmed struck three times. The Bangladesh pacer removed Brian Bennett, Ben Curran and wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga to put the visitors under immediate pressure.
Ervine and Taylor then transformed the innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 150 runs, rebuilding patiently before accelerating against the Bangladesh attack.
Taylor made 81 off 101 balls, hitting 10 fours, while captain Ervine narrowly missed a century, scoring 93 from 106 deliveries with nine boundaries. Their partnership carried Zimbabwe to 174 before Taylor departed, caught off Saif Hassan in the 37th over.
Ervine continued to anchor the innings despite losing partners at the other end. Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza managed only four, while Wessly Madhevere added 17 and Brad Evans scored five.
Late contributions from Newman Nyamhuri and Wellington Masakadza, who remained unbeaten on 21 apiece, helped Zimbabwe finish on 271 for eight in their 50 overs. Taskin returned figures of three for 44, while Shoriful Islam claimed two wickets for 47. Saif also took two wickets.
Bangladesh's chase began with promise through Tanzid Hasan, but the hosts struggled to build partnerships. Tanzid struck nine fours and a six in his 38-ball 46, yet his dismissal at 66 for two was followed by the loss of Najmul Hossain Shanto for four.
Saif Hassan scored 26 and Rishad Hossain added 23, but neither could provide the sustained support needed to keep the chase alive. Brad Evans dismantled the middle and lower order, finishing with four wickets for 45 runs in 6.4 overs. Wellington Masakadza took two for 18, while Raza also claimed two wickets.
Bangladesh were dismissed for 172 in 33.4 overs, falling well short of the target and giving Zimbabwe a convincing start to the tri-series.
The defeat leaves Bangladesh needing a stronger all-round performance in their next match against Afghanistan on October 21 as they seek to recover in the three-team competition.
