Customs intelligence officials have seized gold bars and gold-paste objects worth nearly Tk 5 crore in separate drives at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram and Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

The seizures were made on October 18, according to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Monday.

During a drive at Chattogram airport, officials recovered four pieces of gold bars weighing 466 grams, concealed inside a frying pan and a vegetable grater carried by a passenger arriving from Abu Dhabi on a US-Bangla Airlines flight BS-350 at 7:00 AM.

The passenger had declared carrying 100 grams of gold ornaments but denied having any additional gold, the press release said.

Including the declared ornaments, a total of 566 grams of gold was seized. The estimated value of the gold, including customs duties and taxes, is Tk 98.30 lakh.

In a separate operation at Dhaka airport, customs intelligence officials recovered six oval-shaped gold-paste objects concealed in the rectums of two passengers arriving from the Maldives on a US-Bangla Airlines flight BS-338 at 6:15 PM on the same day.

Three objects were recovered from each passenger. The objects had a preliminary combined weight of 2.734 kilograms and an estimated value of around Tk 4 crore.

However, the actual gold content and value of the recovered objects have yet to be determined. The objects have been kept intact to preserve the evidence, and their precise gold content and value will be established after proper testing, according to the press release.

The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate said its operations against gold smuggling would continue through intelligence-led surveillance and risk-based passenger screening.
