Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has the legal authority to ask any member of the cabinet to resign, Attorney General Barrister Md Ruhul Quddus Kajal has said.
He made the remarks on Monday while responding to a question from journalists at his office.
The attorney general said the prime minister has a constitutional role in the appointment of cabinet members and the discharge of their duties. Accordingly, he also has the authority to ask a minister to step down, he added.
Article 58 of the Constitution of Bangladesh contains provisions governing the tenure and resignation of the prime minister and other ministers.
Under the constitutional provisions, if the prime minister resigns or ceases to hold office, the other ministers are also required to resign.
The Constitution also provides that if the prime minister asks a minister to resign and the minister refuses, the president may dismiss that minister from office.
