Signing of Agreement for Installation of a Rooftop Solar Power Plant with an 8.42 MW (Peak) Generation Capacity for Solar Electricity Generation under the Green Port Initiative at Chittagong Port With the aim of establishing an environmentally friendly and sustainable port management system, an agreement was signed on Monday (October 19)  2026, between the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) and Greener Garments Initiative Limited (GGI) under the Green Port Initiative.

On behalf of Chittagong Port, the agreement was signed by the Chairman of the organization, Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman, OSP, NDC, NCC, PSC; while on behalf of GGI, it was signed by its Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mohammad Nure Alam. Through this agreement, an initiative has been taken to install a state-of-the-art rooftop solar power plant with a generation capacity of approximately 8.42 MW (peak) by installing solar panels on the unused roofs of various buildings and sheds of the Chittagong Port Authority.

In accordance with the Government of Bangladesh’s directives for establishing solar power plants through private investment, GGI will implement the project entirely at its own cost under an Operating Expense (OpEx) model.

Consequently, the Chittagong Port Authority will not be required to make any initial capital investment or financing. This environmentally friendly rooftop solar plant will supply uninterrupted solar electricity to Chittagong Port for the next 20 years from the Commercial Operation Date. The power-selling company, GGI, will be responsible for the overall design of the project, procurement of the necessary equipment, construction, testing, operation, and maintenance.

The Port Authority will purchase the electricity generated at the fixed tariff rate specified in the contractual terms. The Chittagong Port Authority will source its daily electricity requirements from this solar project. In addition, by prioritizing renewable energy and in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, this agreement will play a strong role in earning carbon credit.

This will advance the transformation of Chittagong Port into a Green Port. Through this initiative, CPA will simultaneously gain an alternative source of electricity, while pressure on the national grid will be reduced. It may be noted that, using this solar electricity, savings of approximately BDT 100 crore on electricity bills are expected for CPA over the next 20 years. The Chittagong Port Authority believes that this initiative will be fully consistent with the Government’s directives on the use of renewable energy and will be financially beneficial for CPA.

At the same time, Chittagong Port will not only remain one of the main driving forces of the country’s economic development but will also become an example in the use of renewable energy, the reduction of greenhouse gas and carbon emissions, and the establishment of sustainable port management.

In the future, the project will be connected to the national grid through a net-metering system, which will also allow surplus electricity generated to be supplied to the national grid.
