Man gets life term for raping child

A court in Gazipur has sentenced Shafiqul Islam Khandaker to life imprisonment for raping an eight-year-old girl in Sreepur in 2024.

Judge Gazi Delwar Hossain of the Gazipur Tribunal for the Prevention of Violence Against Children delivered the verdict on Monday (October 19). Shafiqul was the sole accused in the case and is currently in jail.

Abu Taher Nayan, public prosecutor of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, confirmed the verdict.

According to the case documents, the incident took place on July 13, 2024, at a unit of a five-storey building owned by Badsha Mia in the Mawna Chowrasta area of Sreepur.

Two days later, on July 15, the victim’s mother, Sahida Akter, filed a case with Sreepur Police Station under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.

Shafiqul is the son of Khondaker Abdul Aziz of Mulaid village in Telihati union of Sreepur upazila.

After a lengthy trial, the court sentenced him to life imprisonment on Monday.
