An 11-month-old child drowned in a bucket of water kept in the yard of his house in Gangni upazila of Meherpur on Monday afternoon.

The incident took place around 3 PM in Bholadanga village. The deceased, Palash, was the son of Harun Or Rashid of the village.

According to local sources, the child's mother was busy washing a buffalo in the yard when Palash, who was playing nearby, accidentally fell into a bucket filled with water.

His mother rescued him from the bucket and rushed him to Gangni Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty physician declared him dead.

Dr Russell Rana, an emergency department physician at the health complex, said examinations showed that the child had died before reaching the hospital.

Ariful Islam Suja, a member of Ward No. 6 of Sholotaka Union Parishad, confirmed the incident and said the child had accidentally fallen into the bucket while playing in the yard.

Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhaddid Morshed Chowdhury said police were sent to the scene after receiving the news. As the family filed no complaint, permission was given to bury the body.
