Bangladesh Railway is set to add 18 modern broad-gauge passenger coaches to its fleet by late November, featuring CCTV cameras, a baby care room and a prayer room.
The coaches will be handed over to the railway’s traffic department after inspections and trial runs. They may be deployed on the Dhaka-Pabna route.
The Ministry of Railways said a second shipment of 20 coaches is expected to arrive in December. These coaches are expected to operate on the Dhaka-Khulna route.
Despite the expansion of railway networks across the country, a shortage of passenger coaches remains a major obstacle to improving services, preventing trains from meeting demand on several routes.
In 2024, Bangladesh signed an agreement with India for the manufacture and supply of 200 broad-gauge passenger coaches. The 18 coaches are part of the first shipment under the agreement.
The new coaches are equipped with CCTV cameras, emergency alarm systems, a baby care room and a prayer room.
Shah Sufi Nur Mohammad, supervisor of the Saidpur Railway Workshop, said an Indian technical team would arrive on Saturday for joint commissioning. The coaches would join the fleet in November after the necessary trials.
State Minister for Railways Habib Rashid said the government had planned to procure more than 1,500 new coaches to address the shortage. The ministry has also taken special initiatives to tackle the shortage of locomotives.
Under the agreement, all 200 broad-gauge coaches are scheduled to join the railway fleet by December 2027.
