Ensure Strict Security to Protect Communal Harmony of Durga Puja

Published : Tuesday, 20 October, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Bangladesh has long stood as a beacon of interfaith unity, and we express our heartfelt gratitude to the people of this country whose unwavering commitment to peace makes this enduring communal harmony possible. On that note, we warmly welcome the nationwide celebration of Sharadiya Durga Puja, the grandest religious festival of our Bengali Hindu community, which is being observed across the nation in a vibrant and festive spirit. Today, as thousands of devotees gather at Puja mandaps to offer Maha Navami prayers and mark the ultimate triumph of good over evil, the festival serves as a poignant reminder of our shared heritage and mutual respect.

We, however, must acknowledge the critical role played by our state apparatus. The authorities, law enforcement agencies and local administrations deserve genuine praise, having played a commendable role in ensuring peace and security at the mandaps nationwide. Their proactive deployment of security personnel, efficient crowd management and active engagement of local volunteers allow devotees to observe their sacred rituals without fear or hindrance. Even so, while these initial efforts deserve appreciation, maintaining vigilance must remain the top priority until the very end"through Bijoya Dashami and the final immersion processions.

The government’s success in keeping celebrations peaceful marks a welcome step; nevertheless, the final phase of the festival brings distinct challenges. Crowds will peak, access routes will grow congested, and more importantly, the risk of deliberate provocations often heightens during large public gatherings. Meanwhile, citizens must remain vigilant against rumours and propaganda that threaten our long-standing communal harmony. Reckless misinformation can quickly amplify isolated incidents, thus spreading unnecessary fear and weakening public confidence. Therefore, citizens must verify facts before sharing them online, while law enforcement agencies also need to remain exceptionally alert to deliver an immediate, impartial and decisive response to any potential threat.

Against this backdrop, maintaining public safety requires more than police presence; it tests our state responsibility and civic maturity. Moreover, the spirit of Durga Puja reminds us of our collective duty to stand against hatred, injustice and sectarian divides. Concurrently, police and local administrations must maintain tight coordination with community leaders, youth volunteers and civil society organisations. Together, they must prevent misunderstandings and neutralise malicious rumours before they take root to ensure the festival concludes on a triumphant note.

We expect the exemplary environment established over the past few days to remain intact until the final idol immersion. Every citizen, regardless of class, creed, or faith, deserves to celebrate their religious heritage with dignity and peace of mind. Ultimately, the true success of Durga Puja lies not just in temporary security arrangements, but in demonstrating that equal rights, effective law enforcement and mutual respect remain enduring values in Bangladesh.
