Observer Online Report

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) detained 84 men and women and seized a large quantity of alcohol during a raid on a house in the capital’s Bhatara area early Tuesday.

The raid began in the early hours of October 20 and was led by Elias Kabir, deputy commissioner of the DB’s Uttara division. DB chief and additional commissioner Shafiqul Islam confirmed the information.

According to DB sources, the house belongs to Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdullah Al Zahir, who works at the Police Headquarters. Allegations of immoral activities at the property prompted the raid.

The two-and-a-half-storey house is located in Police Housing-1 in Bhatara and was reportedly rented out through Airbnb, a short-term accommodation platform.

DB members detained 84 men and women from the house and seized a large quantity of alcohol during the operation.

Abdullah Al Zahir, a member of the 24th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) batch, is currently posted in the Personal Management-2 branch of the Police Headquarters. He previously served as staff officer to former Additional Inspector General of Police Mokhlesur Rahman.

Attempts were made several times to contact Abdullah Al Zahir by phone for his comment on the raid, but he did not answer. His mobile phone was later found switched off.
