The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to defend the kingdom against continuing drone and missile attacks launched by Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The British Ministry of Defence issued a statement on Tuesday (October 20) confirming that Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets will conduct defensive counter-air missions to protect Saudi Arabian cities and critical infrastructure.

Over the past two months, Houthi rebels have launched multiple strikes targeting key Saudi installations and oil facilities using ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The UK already provides air-to-air refueling support to Saudi forces, alongside deployed air defence systems and military personnel stationed in the region to protect vital assets.

A spokesperson for the British government clarified that the newly deployed Typhoon aircraft will focus strictly on intercepting incoming Houthi missiles and drones, emphasizing that the jets will not conduct offensive strikes inside Yemen.

Tensions escalated in July after the Saudi-led coalition targeted Sanaa International Airport in Yemen as an incoming flight from Iran was landing. Though the aircraft was undamaged, Houthi forces retaliated by threatening Saudi maritime traffic in the Red Sea and launching strikes on strategic targets, demanding an end to the naval blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, ground fighting continues between Houthi rebels and Saudi-backed government forces as the rebel group seeks to expand its territorial control across Yemen.
