The Bangladesh Medical Tourism Association (BMTA) and Japan's International Medical Coordinator Companies Association (JIMCA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to simplify medical treatment procedures for Bangladeshi patients in Japan and expand access to advanced healthcare services.

The MoU was signed at a hotel in the capital on Tuesday, with discussions focusing on expanding cooperation between Bangladesh and Japan in medical tourism and international healthcare.

Officials said the initiative aims to facilitate travel arrangements and medical coordination for Bangladeshi patients seeking treatment in Japan. It will also help patients learn more about Japan's advanced cardiac care, robotic medical technology and specialised healthcare services.

At the event, Professor Hiromasa Otake, chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Kobe University Hospital, spoke at a seminar titled “Advances in Cardiac Care in Japan”. He shared his experience in modern cardiac treatment, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and complex coronary interventions.

Professor Tomo Ito, head of the International Medical Communication Centre at Kobe University Hospital, spoke at a session on international medical coordination. He discussed healthcare services for international patients and prospects for expanding cooperation with Bangladesh.

JIMCA Secretary General Katsuya Sakagami, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Country Representative Kiyoshi Amada and Senior Representative Yuko Morikawa, and Ship International Hospital Board Director Futoshi Kono attended the event.

Representatives of BMTA included its President Mohammad Arif Hossain, Vice-Presidents AMR Majumder Liton, Shabbir Ahmad Tamim and Abdur Rashid, and General Secretary AKM Mufasserul Haque, among others.

BMTA has been working on medical tourism in Bangladesh and partnerships with international healthcare institutions since 2021. JIMCA, meanwhile, assists international patients seeking medical treatment in Japan in navigating the treatment process.
