NARAYANGANJ, Oct 20: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Hossain Fakir has vowed strict action against criminals regardless of their political views, caste, religion or influence, declaring a zero-tolerance policy toward drugs, teen gangs and extortion.
“Without a stable law and order situation, foreign investment will not come, and the economy will not improve,” he said. Urging the public to share information about troublemakers, he added, “You know who is creating problems. Give us the information.”
IGP made the remarks on Monday night after visiting the puja mandap at Ramakrishna Mission Ashram in Missionpara of Narayanganj.
He said efforts were underway to rebuild the police force following the challenges that emerged after the July uprising, with a focus on improving officers’ morale, skills and operational capacity. Ensuring public safety, he said, requires citizens to obey the law and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
The IGP also expressed concern over rising drug addiction among young people in neighbourhoods, describing it as a contributing factor to various crimes. He said decisions had already been made at the prime minister’s office to curb teen gang activity.
Those accompanying him included Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman Mia; Dhaka Range Deputy Inspector General Md Mostafizur Rahman; Narayanganj Criminal Investigation Department Superintendent of Police (SP) Md Zakir Hossain, who has been promoted to the rank of additional DIG; Narayanganj SP Habibur Rahman; Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Raihan Kabir; and Additional SP Tarek Al Mehedi.
