Meta will discontinue Facebook’s Reach metric from October 31 and introduce Viewers as the primary metric for measuring how many unique accounts view content on the platform, according to reports on the upcoming change.
The change will affect how Facebook page administrators, media organisations, businesses and content creators track audience reach and evaluate the performance of their posts, photos, videos and Reels.
Reach has traditionally measured how many unique accounts a piece of content reached within a specified period. The new Viewers metric will measure the number of unique accounts viewing Facebook content, although differences in calculation may make direct comparisons with historical Reach figures difficult.
The transition could affect monthly performance reports, audience analysis and digital advertising evaluations, particularly for organisations that rely on Facebook analytics to assess content distribution and campaign effectiveness.
Reach and Viewers are different
The new metric means page administrators should exercise caution when comparing previous Reach figures with Viewers data. A change in the reported number may reflect differences in measurement rather than an increase or decline in content performance.
Viewers should also not be confused with Views. Viewers refers to the number of unique accounts that viewed content, while Views measures the number of times content was viewed, potentially including repeat views.
What page administrators should do
Page administrators and digital marketing professionals should preserve important historical reports and review their performance dashboards ahead of the reported transition.
They should also assess content performance using additional indicators, including reactions, comments, shares and link clicks, rather than relying on a single metric.
The change is expected to require media outlets, businesses and independent content creators to adjust their reporting practices to accommodate the new audience measurement system.
