Police have arrested five individuals, including the victim's younger brother and sister-in-law, in connection with the murder of an elderly woman in Dhamoirhat upazila of Naogaon, reportedly driven by greed for gold earrings, property, and a dispute over illegal drug trade.

The arrested suspects were identified as the victim's younger brother Moznu Rahman, 56, his wife Hosne Ara, 42, along with Rabiul Islam, 39, Hamidur Rahman, 55, and Mosharraf Hossain, 45. Police also recovered a rope and a scarf used in the killing.

Naogaon Superintendent of Police Mohammad Tarikul Islam disclosed the details during a press briefing at the police superintendent’s office on Wednesday (October 21) afternoon.

According to police, locals discovered the bloodstained body of the victim, Halima Begum, 65, on the ridge of a paddy field near a bamboo grove in Chilimpur (Talbona) village on Monday (October 19) morning. Responding officers found one of her earlobes severed and the other torn. Following a murder case filed by the family, police arrested Moznu and his wife late that night. Subsequent raids based on their confessions led to the arrests of the other three suspects from Alampur and Chilimpur areas.

Investigators revealed that Halima, a childless divorcee, lived alone in a makeshift room behind her brother Moznu's house on their paternal property, earning her livelihood through domestic work and livestock rearing. Moznu and his wife coveted her savings and livestock. Meanwhile, local suspect Rabiul harbored a grudge against Halima for opposing his illegal drug trade, while Hamidur and Mosharraf held old enmity over land disputes.

Police stated that the five suspects formulated a plan to kill her roughly five days prior to the incident.

According to the arrestees' confessions, Hamidur lured Halima out of her house around 11:30PM on Sunday (October 18). The suspects then muffled her, dragged her 200 yards behind a hay bale, tied her hands with a rope, and strangled her with her own scarf. Hamidur severed one earlobe and tore the other to steal her gold earrings before dumping the body near the bamboo grove and dividing the stolen jewelry among themselves.

The arrestees have been produced before the court following legal procedures, police said.
