Police arrested a Chhatra League leader from Mirpur in the capital on Wednesday afternoon for following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman during an inspection of cleared footpaths.

The arrestee was identified as Tanvir Jomaddar, vice-president of the Mirzaganj Upazila unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Patuakhali. A team from Mirpur Model Police Station conducted a raid and apprehended him following video analysis.

According to police and local sources, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited the Mirpur-10 area on Saturday to inspect footpaths recently cleared of illegal occupations. Alongside party leaders and activists, Tanvir was present at the scene and tried to get close to the Prime Minister by following him.

A 33-second video clip of the incident quickly went viral on Facebook, prompting law enforcement agencies to launch a drive to trace the BCL leader.

The viral video footage showed Tanvir bypassing police personnel, Dhaka North City Corporation officials, and local BNP leaders to follow the Prime Minister closely at the Mirpur-10 roundabout, eventually pushing past others to reach near the head of government.

Md Hafizur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mirpur Model Police Station, confirmed the arrest, stating that Tanvir was identified and detained after verifying the video footage. Legal proceedings against him are currently underway.
