"Let them kill us too. How will I survive with my two daughters without my husband? Who will look after my children now?" willed a shattered Sharmin Nahar Ruma, breaking down in tears upon receiving the news of her husband's tragic death.

Fainting repeatedly in deep grief, Ruma's heart-rending cries and the helpless faces of her two young daughters brought tears to the eyes of relatives and neighbors gathered at their home in Parnanduyali village of Magura town. A pall of gloom has descended upon the entire area.

Shaker Hossain, joint convener of the Magura Municipal Jubadal and counter master of Royal Express Paribahan, was shot dead inside the transport counter at the Magura Central Bus Terminal early Wednesday (October 21).

Shaker was the sole breadwinner of his family, supporting his wife and two daughters through his earnings. Their elder daughter, Samia, is 11 years old, while the younger daughter, Muntaha, is only six. With the loss of their father, the future of the two children has plunged into profound uncertainty.

Like every other day, Shaker went to his workplace early Wednesday morning and was expected to return home by noon. His wife and children had been waiting for his return, little knowing that he would never come back alive.

Ruma has been unable to accept her husband's sudden demise. Alternating between sobbing uncontrollably and looking helplessly at her daughters, she repeatedly asked how the family would survive and who would bear the responsibility of raising her children.

According to eyewitness accounts, two individuals arrived on a motorcycle in front of the Royal Express counter at around 5:30 AM. While a female passenger present at the counter went to the adjoining washroom, the pillion rider entered the counter and allegedly shot Shaker Hossain before fleeing the scene.

Later, the female passenger returned from the washroom and found Shaker lying face down inside the counter. Upon raising an alarm, people from nearby counters rushed him to the Magura 250-bed Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.

Dr Khandaker Mainul Hasan of the hospital's emergency department stated that Shaker was brought in early in the morning. Those who accompanied him initially claimed he had suffered a stroke. However, an ECG confirmed he had died before arrival, though no visible bleeding was found on his body at the time.

Magura Superintendent of Police Molla Azad Hossain said it was initially suspected that Shaker had died of a stroke or heart attack. However, after discovering a wound on his head, the body was sent to the morgue for an autopsy.

He added that multiple police teams are working to unravel the mystery behind the incident and identify those involved, with evidence collection and investigation underway.

Shaker's death has not only snuffed out a life but instantly shattered a family. Ruma has lost her husband, and Samia and Muntaha have lost their father, leaving the grieving family to face a harsh and uncertain future.
