Prime Minister Tarique Rahman returned to Dhaka on Thursday after an approximately eight-hour visit to Bagerhat and Khulna, during which he inspected several development projects, including the expansion of Mongla Port and the proposed BEZA Economic Zone.

During the daylong tour, the prime minister also issued several directives to the officials concerned.

Tarique Rahman left Dhaka by helicopter for Dacope in Khulna on Thursday morning. From there, he travelled by waterway to Mongla Jetty, where he exchanged views with relevant officials.

He also visited the proposed BEZA Economic Zone. In addition, he reportedly inspected the proposed LNG terminal site near Akram Point in the Sundarbans from a helicopter.

A large crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of the prime minister. He exchanged greetings with members of the public during the visit.

Local residents and businesspeople expressed hope that stalled projects, including the construction of incomplete jetties and dredging work, would be completed as soon as possible.

Policymakers said, the prime minister's visit would help accelerate investment in the region and create alternative employment opportunities for the large number of people who have lost their livelihoods due to climate change.
