GOURIPUR, MYMENSINGH, Oct 22: A 48-year-old man died of electrocution on Wednesday night while attempting to move a dangling electrical wire as a Durga idol was being taken out of a puja mandap for immersion in Gouripur Upazila of the district.
Sanjib Chauhan, son of Shyamlal Chauhan of the Masterbari area, was electrocuted at around 10 pm in front of the Jhalak Fisheries Farm puja mandap in the municipal town. He was rushed to Gauripur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead on arrival, physician Ferdous Al Mamun said.
Puja Committee President Ajit Chauhan alleged that negligence by those responsible for the mandap’s lighting arrangements contributed to the death, saying damaged wires had not been properly insulated despite repeated warnings.
Officer-in-Charge of Gouripur Police Station Habibur Rahman said police had been sent to the spot. No complaint had been filed in connection with the incident, he added.
