DC Comics’ terrifying villain Clayface arrives on the big screen with a story of lost beauty, psychological trauma and a thirst for revenge. Moving beyond conventional superhero action, the film offers a disturbing body-horror experience. The film is releasing worldwide on Friday, October 23, with Star Cineplex bringing it to Bangladeshi audiences on the same day.
Directed by James Watkins, the film stars Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, David Dencik and Eddie Marsan.
In the Batman comic universe, Clayface is a character whose body can transform like mud, allowing him to change his appearance and assume other people's identities. The film explores fear, identity crisis and disturbing physical transformations through this unusual ability.
The story centres on Matt Hagen, an ambitious actor who rises from Gotham City to become a popular Hollywood star through his talent and hard work. However, an attack by a local criminal gang leaves his face severely disfigured, shattering his career, personal life and dreams.
Abandoned by loved ones and colleagues, Matt turns to an advanced scientific treatment in the hope of restoring his lost beauty. Although the procedure brings back his former appearance, it comes with horrifying side effects. His body and mind begin to deteriorate, gradually eroding his humanity and grip on reality as an obsession with revenge takes hold.
Departing from conventional superhero tropes, the film focuses on psychological terror and body horror. Disturbing scenes of facial disintegration, physical transformation and the dark side of scientific research form the core of its narrative. Film enthusiasts believe the collaboration between director James Watkins and screenwriter Mike Flanagan has given the project a distinctive edge.
Its layered screenplay, visual effects and detailed makeup have already drawn attention from moviegoers. Following its world premiere in Los Angeles and the release of its trailer, 'Clayface' has reportedly attracted considerable praise from critics.
