Severe storms and torrential rains caused by Typhoon Champi have left one person dead and at least 171 injured in Taiwan, while cutting off power to over 8,400 households in Japan's southern Okinawa prefecture.
Taiwan's Fire Department reported that one fatality and 171 injuries were recorded as of 3:00 PM local time on Friday (October 23).
Authorities noted that the casualty toll rose sharply from an earlier count of 94 injured.
Most injuries occurred in vehicle-related accidents, falls from motorcycles, slips, or from being struck by falling trees and billboards knocked down by high winds. Nine foreign nationals were among the injured, including five Vietnamese, two Indonesian, and two Malaysian citizens.
In Okinawa, Japan's southernmost island chain, the storm severely disrupted power supplies. Local power utilities confirmed that about 8,400 households were left without electricity as of 2:00 PM local time, up from 3,630 households earlier in the day.
Okinawa Electric Power Company stated that dangerous wind and rain conditions have slowed down restoration work, making it difficult for technicians to fix damaged power lines.
Weather forecasts indicate that after moving along the northeastern coast of Taiwan, Typhoon Champi will pass close to Japan's Okinawa islands.
