A 37-year-old Bangladeshi expatriate, Anwar Hossain, was killed after being hit by a speeding private car in Abha, the capital of Saudi Arabia’s Asir Province, on Thursday night.
The accident occurred at around 11:30 PM Bangladesh time on October 22, according to his family.
Anwar was the son of Abdul Haque of Beila village in Sagardighi Union under Ghatail upazila of Tangail.
Family members said Anwar had moved to Saudi Arabia two years ago to support his family. He was returning from work when the speeding car struck him, leaving him with a head injury. Locals rescued him and took him to a hospital in Abha, where doctors declared him dead.
His death has plunged the family into grief. Anwar was the family’s sole breadwinner.
His elder brother, Sanwar Hossain, said Anwar was the middle of three brothers. He had moved abroad after suffering business losses and falling into debt, hoping to improve the family’s financial situation.
Azizul Islam, general secretary of Sagardighi Union BNP, said Anwar had been an active party worker and had been involved with the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal and Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal during difficult times.
He said Anwar’s body was being kept at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, according to his friends, and called for government assistance to bring it back to Bangladesh.
