Two men were arrested with 1,039 small packets of suspected heroin after allegedly attempting to flee a traffic police checkpoint in Rampura, Dhaka, on Friday morning.
The incident took place around 8:00 AM at the Wapda Road intersection in front of Better Life Hospital on DIT Road.
Traffic police said officers signalled a TVS Apache motorcycle travelling from Rampura Bridge towards Malibagh to stop for a document check. The motorcycle allegedly struck two police officers as the riders tried to flee. One officer managed to stop the motorcycle.
The suspects, identified as Manik, 30, and Ali, 29, allegedly abandoned the motorcycle and tried to escape on foot. Police said they attempted to attack officers with a sharp weapon before being apprehended.
Police recovered 1,039 small packets containing a substance suspected to be heroin from a bag carried by the two men.
Manik is from Mosque Goli in North Mugda, while Ali is from the Jhilpar area of North Mugda, police said.
Further legal action will be taken in the case.
